Transforming lives through sports and recreation since 1982 …
In 1979, a young girl with cerebral palsy named Kim Salzmann stood up and took her first steps in ski boot, sparking a simple but powerful question from her parents: “If she can walk, why not ski?”
With support from Sunday River and a small group of passionate pioneers, Kim soon made her first runs, proving that adaptive equipment and belief could open the slopes to everyone. Then, in 1982, Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation was founded.
More than 44 years later, that moment of possibility lives on through Maine Adaptive, which continues to adapt sports so people of all abilities can experience freedom, confidence and joy.
For more than four decades, Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation has stood on a simple but powerful belief: that everyone, regardless of ability, deserves the chance to experience the joy, freedom and belonging found in outdoor recreation. This belief has guided our organization from a small alpine program on a single mountain to a statewide network of adaptive sports serving hundreds each year, from children trying a sport for the first time, to veterans rebuilding strength and confidence, to discovering community and independence outdoors.
Today, Maine Adaptive is stronger, more relevant, and more impactful than ever. Our programs have grown, our statewide presence has expanded, and our commitment to breaking down barriers for every body and every ability has never been clearer. But with that growth comes the responsibility to fund our mission. Please help with a generous donation today! Credit and Photo from MASR Mountain Center Campaign Brochure
